A Closer Look

The Story Behind the Story

This true story grabbed me by the heart from the moment I saw a tiny paragraph about the missing boys in the back pages of The New York Times. What I LOVE about this story was that, despite our divisive times, these trapped soccer players managed to bring the whole world together in kindness. More than twenty countries put aside their differences and joined forces to tackle what many called “Mission Impossible.” The rescue effort was an example of the miracles that can occur with international cooperation, teamwork, and courage.

To tell the boys’ story for a picture book audience, I teamed up with Thai journalist Pathana Sornhiran who was reporting outside the Tham Luang Nang Non Caves that summer. Conditions inside the cave and emergency rescue plans were changing day by day so it was invaluable to have Pathana on site to witness what was happening, to accurately translate government statements and the boys’ press conference, and to reflect a Thai sensibility and point of view. I couldn’t (and wouldn’t) have written this book without her.

Sketches by Dow Phurmiruk

We were thrilled to have acclaimed children’s book artist Dow Phurmiruk illustrate the book. Dow used ink, charcoal, and pencil for her sketches and colored the book digitally with rich jewel tones and a judicious use of light for the cave interiors.
