Susan Hood

Susan Hood is the award-winning author of many picture books for young readers, including ADA’S VIOLIN; SHAKING THINGS UP: 14 Young Women Who Changed the World; and TITAN AND THE WILD BOARS: The True Cave Rescue of the Thai Soccer Team. Susan is the recipient of the  E.B. White Honor Award, the Christopher Award, the Américas Award, the International Latino Award, and the Bank Street Flora Steiglitz Straus Award, given to “a distinguished work of nonfiction that serves as an inspiration to young people.” In 2018, Susan published her first middle grade novel LIFEBOAT 12, which won the 2019 SCBWI Golden Kite Award for middle grade fiction and is now nominated for many state awards.

Before launching a full-time writing career, Susan worked as an editor and freelance writer for kids, parents, and teachers. She spent many happy years as the Children’s Content Director of Nick Jr. Magazine, working with the superstars of kidlit—Eric Carle, Andrea Davis Pinkney, John Scieszka, Maurice Sendak, Melissa Sweet, Rosemary Wells and more—to create original stories for the magazine. Before that, Susan was a children’s book editor at Sesame Workshop, and a children’s magazine editor at Scholastic and Instructor Magazine for early childhood educators.

On weekends, Susan learned her craft as a freelance author. She wrote board books, interactive books, nonfiction, and beginning readers for kids ages 1-8, publishing with Disney, Fisher Price, Penguin Putnam, Scholastic, Sesame Workshop, and Simon & Schuster, among others. She wrote for parents and early childhood educators in The New York Times, Nickelodeon’s ParentsConnect, Sesame Street Parent’s Guide, Working Mother, and more.

Susan lives with her family and two-year-old pup in Connecticut and enjoys spending her summers on the water—swimming, kayaking, and sailing with her husband along the New England coast. Visit Susan at
